CHAPTER 19

The whole feeling in the castle had changed drastically and Mackenzie didn’t think that it was only because she’d had her first night of solid sleep since Kenth’s collapse.

For days, the prospect of Kenth dying had darkened everyone’s mood, and the rescued children were distraught and uncomfortable, creeping around like kicked puppies. The news outside of the castle was dismal—Mackenzie wasn’t privy to the war meetings and wasn’t sure what the news actually was, but she heard whispered mentions of assassination attempts and the theft of magical items. Leinani’s mother and father had left to help protect Mo’orea following some civil unrest, and even Drayger seemed to be taking the recent developments seriously.

Drayger, by all accounts, never took anything seriously.

But Kenth’s dramatic recovery had altered the mood considerably. The children, finally starting to believe that they were free and shaking off the last strains of Amara’s spells, brightened and began to play in earnest, encouraged by all of the castle staff and the royalty themselves. They raced each other down the long hallways and the wings echoed with laughter.

And Kenth was going to live.

Mackenzie thought he was going to kiss her no less than four times that morning and once after lunch.

She told himself that she was probably reading too much into a lingering glance and an expression of gratitude, but it didn’t change the fact that she was dying for Kenth to take those liberties. He had to know what she wanted, didn’t he? Did he not want it himself?

She wondered if she imagined that the daylight itself felt longer. She knew that the days were lengthening again, but she didn’t think it should be a change so radical in the first few days of January that she would be able to notice it.

But it really did seem like the sun was higher than it had been even just the day before, and that it cast more light through the tops of the snow-covered spruce trees.

She took a decadent shower after lunch and went to find Kenth in the afternoon, only to discover that he was deep in a discussion with Fask and Rian. He looked up when she wandered through the castle to find him in the informal dining room and flashed her a quick smile, but didn’t invite her in to join the serious discussion.

She smiled back and wondered what she should do next. The older kids were being fitted for clothing. Should she offer to help with that? She wasn’t sorry to have a little space to herself after three days of Dalaya’s
